Bradshaw “NED BUNTLINE: So Much Larger Than Life” On Sunday, January 26th, 2020, a lecture and book signing on 19th century author Ned Buntline will take place in the Hobart Book Village presented by local author, T. M. Bradshaw. This free of charge presentation will begin at 2 pm at Liberty Rock Books, LLC located at 678 Main Street in Hobart, NY. Last year, T. M. Bradshaw gave a lecture on "The Newspapermen: The Mirror, 1851 - 1948." which was so entertaining, she just had to be asked back and expound on her latest publication, "NED BUNTLINE: So Much Larger Than Life". The book details the colorful, outrageous, ofttimes legendary adventures of an American paradox. Ned Buntline was indeed a fascinating study in contrasts. As revealed in this presentation, he was:

February 16th, 2020 - ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Scott Jensen “TECHNOLOGY'S ALSO RANS” In 2012, Scott Jensen graced our Lecture Series with a highly entertaining lecture: "What a Great Idea: The Fascinating Stories Behind Some of Our Favorite Toys". This time, Scott will spotlight inventions that ..... well, didn't quite reach the same heights as some others, but nonetheless, have great stories behind them. In the Wild West of emerging technologies, there are always more competing solutions than the marketplace can support. Some of these technologies, such as the Linn Tractor and the Kodak Disc Camera, looked like winners for a while only to swiftly disappear when a more practical competitor was introduced. Other technologies, like RCA sound cartridge tapes, came and went so fast they're hardly remembered. This lecture will look at eight (or is it nine? You decide.) of these also-ran technologies showing how they approached the problem they were designed to solve, and with the advantage of hindsight, how they were doomed to fail. Scott Jensen is an Associate Professor of Visual Communications at Cazenovia College in Cazenovia, New York. Scott was recently recognized for drawing Digby's Hardware cartoon for The Hardware Connection. He has been drawing the comic strip since the first issue came out in November 2009. Now celebrating its 10 year anniversary, the all-digital magazine showcases Scott's work in the November issue, and describes the process of how the cartoon becomes a digital strip. Scott has been cartooning for more than 40 years, getting his start drawing editorial cartoons for the local newspaper at age 14. For 33 years, Scott has also drawn a line of humorous greeting cards for Oatmeal Studios that are sold both nationally and internationally (and locally at Adams' Book Shop). Work from Jensen's Digby Hardware strip and his Oatmeal Studios greeting card line were on display last year at a gallery exhibition in Spain at Le Centre d'Art La Rectoria in Saint Pere De Vilamajor Barcelona. April 26th, 2020 ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Deirdre Larkin “Impromptu Gardening Stories" - Details to Follow May 17th, 2020 ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Philip Mosley “RESUMING MAURICE: Maeterlinck & 12 Other Shades of Literary Fame” Back by popular demand, author, Philip Mosley will give a lecture on and sign copies of his latest publication "RESUMING MAURICE and Other Essays on Writers and Celebrity". Dr. Mosley is Distinguished Professor Emeritus of English and Comparative Literature at Penn State University, PA. He grew up in Norwich, England, attended Norwich School, and obtained his MA and PhD from the University of East Anglia. He is author of a number of books on literature and cinema, including The Cinema of the Dardenne Brothers: Responsible Realism (2013). This slightly retitled lecture, “RESUMING MAURICE: Maeterlinck & 12 Other Shades of Literary Fame" focuses on a collection of personal essays on greater and lesser known writers whose lives and careers have sparked some of the author's own literary and historical interests. Drawing on the experience of a 40-year academic career, he also introduces elements of personal narrative into his appreciations of this diverse set of authors whose backgrounds range from: English - Vita Sackville West, Whitwell Elwin, George Barker, John Seymour, Virginia Haggard, and J. K. Nettlefold. Welsh - Dylan Thomas American - Ned Washington Belgian - Maurice Maeterlinck Danish - Karen Blixen Mexican - Octavio Paz, Rosario Castellanos Kenyan - Ngugi wa Thiong’o. Corresponding to the growing academic subdiscipline of celebrity studies, a unifying theme of literary celebrity and its discontents runs throughout the book. Chapter 1, ‘Resuming Maurice’, on Maeterlinck, for example is the capstone essay and includes a ‘Pre-amble’ on the celebrity theme. The essays on Barker, Elwin, Seymour and Nettlefold have strong East Anglian connections, while the one on Virginia Haggard invokes the Norfolk origin of her famous great-uncle, the Victorian novelist Sir Henry Rider Haggard. All are welcome to this event and light refreshments will be served. We hope that you will join us for this special and enlightening literary presentation. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ There will be another lecture in May to coincide with the Grand Opening of NY Books & Ephemera.
